Saving Money With The Help Of Summer TV

Do you think the summer heat waves made this TV explode?

Still bummed about your shows reaching their season finales? Don’t worry, Summer TV is here to teach you some money lessons.

I’m not sure if it is the seemingly endless streak of thunderstorms or the fact that ESPN only talks about baseball, but I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that summer is in full swing.

There are tons of great things about summer (Sunshine! Fireworks! Big movies!), and of course, there are some bad things. One of the biggest bummers is the change in television. Most of the best shows go on vacation while the networks replace them with reality, gimmicks, and reruns.

But you know what I love? Reality, gimmicks, and reruns!

Summer is the best time for guilty pleasures, marathons, and exciting new finds.

That being said, I found some financial lessons in this whacky world of summer TV.

American Pickers

I’ve been watching a lot of American Pickers lately. Surprisingly, it’s been really enjoyable watching Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz (typed those from memory, didn’t even have to look up the last names) dig through someone else’s unwanted collections and garbage.

The show is full of amazing finds and great deals. I’m not advising you to buy a van, travel the country, and buy rusty bicycles. I do, however, think that there is plenty of room for picking in the life of the broke college student or grad.

Whether you go out to yard sales in search of cheap practical purchases or look to sell your own stuff to those in the market, the picking mentality can help your budget.

Diners, Drive-Ins, And Dives / Man Vs. Food / Burger Land

I love food. I love it so much that I watch food on TV. Just watching the cheese melting onto a burger or seeing a soup transform from bowls of ingredients to one big pot of deliciousness is very exciting for me.

Summer is one of the best times to go out to eat. There are plenty of big events and free time to grab a meal, but that can do serious damage to your wallet.

Dining out should be kept in check, but if you’re going to do it, you better make the most of it. Hit a new spot that’s off the beaten path or go to a famous restaurant that you’ve never been to before. A good place to start is with the shows I listed. Check out their websites to see where the hosts have been and try a spot that they recommend near you. This way you’ll know ahead of time that the food is TV-host approved.

When Man vs. Food came through Philadelphia, they went to an ice cream parlor called The Franklin Fountain. I have since visited many times, and it keeps getting better with each return visit.
